Please, please, from the bottom of my heart, enable Linux support. Before ignoring the rest of the post: I am not asking for a Native Linux build, Proton runs just as well (sometimes better) than Native Windows.
This is the ONLY game I play on Steam (of 100+) that cannot run on my system, and it is for no reason. I would love to get back into this game with the new hope from the announcement earlier this week. This community-focused move would be huge for establishing trust in the new leadership. BattlEye works on Linux already. This would (most likely) require very minimal investment from Bungie's end.
The linked long Reddit post explains in more detail, but the main points being:
- This would not require the removal of BattlEye. It has compatibility with Linux, and just requires Bungie to email BattlEye to change a value in order to enable this compatibility.
- Destiny 2 can already detect if your system is running Linux, and has built in functionality to prevent you from running the game via Wine/Proton, and will automatically ban your game account if you attempt to circumvent it, regardless of your reasoning for why. This also means that Bungie can easily use a debugger to find the specific function to remove this detection if they are unsure where it lies within the code base.
- Linux currently makes up for nearly 4%~ of the entire user base on Steam as of September 2026, as compared to 1%~ in August of 2021, when BattlEye was implemented. While at first glance this might not seem significant, the Steam Hardware Survey covers anywhere from 10 million to 200 million user's hardware & specifications. That's 400,000 users minimum, and 8,000,000 at maximum of people who are unable to access the game due to Bungie's decision to purposefully exclude Linux users. This isn't even counting OSX (Mac) users, which have been at a solid 2.5~ percent for the last 5 years.

After the newfound hope our community has for this game, please allow Linux users to enjoy the wonderful fellowship and story this game has to offer.

4 Replies3.9 (down from last month)percent of steam users play on linux, of them how many would actually play destiny 2, then of them, how many dont already own the content or would pay into the game? 93 percent of Steam is played on Windows and google estimates there are like 200 million steam users, and with that huge number, D2 has only ever had a max concurrent player count of 316,750. That equates to 0.158375% of all Steam windows users. Linux at 4 percent would be 8 million users, applying that same percentage of d2 players from windows would mean that 12,670 would be the potential number of D2 players on linux. That is a tiny sliver of a population to dedicate resources to. its not just gimping battleye to make it work. D2 also has an inhouse built anitcheat that would need to be adapted. Then you have the uptraining of support staff, because they cant just tell linux players with problems to pound sand, uptrain security staff, writing knowledge base articles, additional QA testing for patches and updates, along with probably more stuff that I am not considering. Bottom line is its not just send an email or flip a switch. Supporting another OS means SUPPORTING that OS. Until Linux overcomes the catch22 its in, there is little profit to do it.

Bungie uses another anti cheat other than battle eye
