For the Future of Destiny: Please Keep Gameplay at the Heart of the Experience
Hello Bungie,
I'd like to share some feedback as a player who has been with Destiny since the very first game.
In Destiny 1, I mainly played Titan. What I loved most about the game was, above all, the gameplay: the feel of the weapons, the gunfights, class abilities, positioning, and character progression.
Everything seemed to revolve around one simple idea: having fun playing and fighting.
Over the years, Destiny 2 has evolved considerably. Movement, jumping, platforming and advanced traversal have become much more important parts of the experience.
I completely understand why this direction appeals to some players. It allows Bungie to create more varied activities and gives the game a greater sense of verticality and movement.
But for other players, it can have the opposite effect.
Personally, I'm not comfortable with difficult jumping sections and platforming. That's simply not the kind of challenge I look for in a FPS. I prefer difficulty to come from combat, weapon mastery, positioning, abilities and character builds.
And that's why I think this is an important point to consider for the future of Destiny.
I'm not asking Bungie to remove movement or platforming. They absolutely have a place in the franchise.
I simply believe they should never become more important than what should remain at the core of Destiny:
the gameplay.
A player should want to launch Destiny because the game itself is fun to play. Story, rewards, progression systems and activities should enhance that experience rather than replace it.
For future Destiny projects, I'd love to see a balance that allows different types of players to enjoy the game:
- players who love advanced movement and mobility;
- players who enjoy intense combat;
- players who prefer a more traditional FPS experience;
- and long-time players who started with Destiny 1 and still miss some of those original gameplay sensations.
I also believe this matters from a business perspective.
In a video game, gameplay is what makes players come back day after day. A game can have an excellent story, beautiful graphics and an incredible amount of content, but if the player no longer enjoys actually playing the game, they may eventually stop playing — and potentially stop buying future content.
On the other hand, strong, satisfying and accessible gameplay can keep players engaged for years.
Destiny has something special: its gunplay, weapons, classes and universe.
That's what kept me playing since the first game.
As Bungie looks toward the future of the franchise, my hope is simply this:
Please never lose sight of the most important thing: players need to enjoy playing the game.
Movement can be part of the gameplay.
Platforming can be part of the gameplay.
But they should never overshadow the fact that gameplay itself is the heart of Destiny.
Thank you for taking the time to read this feedback.
I sincerely hope feedback from long-time players can be taken into consideration when shaping the future of Destiny.
