DESTINY INFINITE — What if Destiny never needed another sequel again?

I've been thinking a lot about Destiny's future, especially now that we're facing the reality of a Destiny that may no longer receive substantial new content. And I keep coming back to one question: What if Sony/Bungie didn't make Destiny 3 as another standalone game? What if they instead took the time to rebuild Destiny into a permanent platform containing the franchise's entire history—and designed it so we never needed a Destiny 4, Destiny 5, etc.? I'm calling the concept: DESTINY INFINITE One Guardian. One Sandbox. One Universe. Every Era. The basic philosophy is simple: Destiny's history should be permanent, but its gameplay should never be frozen in history. This wouldn't be D1 and D2 stapled together. It would be one modern Destiny engine/foundation containing the entire Destiny timeline. 1. One modern Foundation There would be one permanent Destiny Infinite Foundation containing the things that define the actual living game: Destinations/patrol spaces, strikes and matchmaking activities, raids/dungeons where appropriate, PvP, vendors, Collections, account progression, your weapons/armor, subclasses, movement, current sandbox rules, social systems, etc. Then campaigns become optional Story Modules. For example: Module 1: Red War / Curse of Osiris / Warmind / Forsaken Module 2: Shadowkeep / Beyond Light / Witch Queen Module 3: Lightfall / Final Shape Module 4: Edge of Fate / Renegades Module 5: Shattered Cycle / Alchemist Module 6: Destiny 3 era & Beyond And then: THE PORTAL A permanent home for all seasonal/episodic story content. This solves a huge storage problem. You don't want Red War installed anymore? Uninstall the Red War campaign. Earth doesn't disappear. Nessus doesn't disappear. Your weapons don't disappear. Your armor doesn't disappear. Your triumphs don't disappear. You're only uninstalling its campaign missions, cinematics, dialogue, one-off story environments and other assets specifically required by that story. The universe remains. The universe is permanent. The stories are portable. 2. One Sandbox, Every Era This is probably my favorite part. If I'm playing an old Venus story mission in 2035, my Guardian shouldn't suddenly forget how to mantle because the original mission came from 2014. 😂 The current Destiny sandbox applies everywhere. If Bungie creates Subclass 5.0 someday? Red War gets it. Forsaken gets it. Witch Queen gets it. Final Shape gets it. Torobatl gets it. Riis gets it. New movement system? Every era gets it. New armor system? New UI? Accessibility improvements? Weapon framework? QoL? Every era. But story-specific mechanics remain with their stories. Sword of Crota? Still there. Aegis? Still there. Scorch Cannon? Still there. Drake Tank sequence? Still there. Temporary campaign power? Still there. So: The story travels backward. Your Guardian does not. You're not booting Destiny 1. You're going back to Venus. 3. Collections should actually solve the Vault problem Another rule: If I earned something once, I should never be afraid to delete it. Collections could remember which perks you've legitimately earned on each weapon. Perks you've never obtained remain greyed out. And when that beautiful god roll finally drops? Save Roll to Collections. Collections remembers that exact earned roll. Years later: Collections → Moon → Tranquility → Saved Rolls → Restore There's your gun. The Vault becomes storage for gear you're actively using rather than 700 weapons you're terrified to dismantle because you'll never get that roll again. 4. Give Destiny a Living World I'd love to see patrol evolve beyond enemies spawning behind the same rock in the same formation for the next twenty years. Give destinations a controlled dynamic encounter system. Bungie's designers create the enemies, encounter pieces, objectives, bosses, hazards, reinforcement behaviors and rules. Then the system dynamically combines them. Maybe tonight a Hive Tomb Ship suddenly reinforces Archer's Line. Tomorrow it doesn't. Maybe Fallen and Hive unexpectedly collide. Maybe a Hive ritual develops somewhere you don't normally see one. Maybe an area becomes increasingly dangerous because enemy activity has escalated there. Not random AI-generated nonsense. Human-designed pieces assembled dynamically within human-designed rules. You should be able to know a destination intimately without knowing exactly what's going to happen there. 5. The Director becomes the actual Destiny universe Instead of cramming 15 years of destinations onto one screen: Destination View → System View → Universe View Click Earth and see its destinations. Zoom outward and see Sol. And eventually there's something strange at the edge of the Director: THE GATEWAY — BEYOND SOL Enter it. The camera pulls backward. Sol becomes one tiny selectable system. And other locations begin appearing: TOROBATL RIIS FUNDAMENT ...and whatever comes after. THAT is the Destiny 3 moment. Not: "Download Destiny 3 and leave everything behind." Instead: The Destiny universe just became bigger. There doesn't eventually need to be a Destiny 4. There's just more Destiny. 6. Dedicated infrastructure If we're rebuilding Destiny at this scale, I'd also love for this to finally be the opportunity to move toward proper scalable dedicated online infrastructure. Not because dedicated servers magically fix every problem—they don't—but because we're talking about building a Destiny intended to survive for decades. Build the backend accordingly. Your account owns your Guardian and history permanently. Your SSD only determines which optional story modules are currently installed. 7. And yes...I'd even accept a subscription. Hear me out before throwing tomatoes. 😂 I'd rather have a transparent, predictable business model than return to the FOMO/season/Eververse/content treadmill that helped get us here. Something approximately like: Destiny Infinite relaunch: ~$40 Destiny Membership: ~$5/month Major permanent expansion: every ~18–24 months Those numbers are obviously illustrative. Sony/Bungie would have to determine what actually works financially. But I'd happily wait 18–24 months for a genuinely substantial expansion. Think more FFXIV philosophy. Maybe: DESTINY INFINITE: TOROBATL Large campaign. Meaningful destination(s). Raid. Dungeon. Strikes. Weapons. Armor. Exotics. Secrets. New story. And most importantly: Torobatl stays. Two years later: DESTINY INFINITE: RIIS Riis gets added. Torobatl doesn't get thrown away. Meanwhile, the ~$5 membership provides predictable recurring support for servers, maintenance, balancing, QoL, events and ongoing development. I'd also dramatically reduce Eververse and put aspirational cosmetics back into gameplay. See someone wearing incredible Hive armor? I want the answer to: "WHERE DID YOU GET THAT?!" to be: "Master Ghosts of the Deep." Not: "$19.99." 😂 8. Destiny shouldn't require attendance This is probably the biggest philosophical change I'd make. I love Warframe and FFXIV's attitude toward taking breaks. Destiny Infinite shouldn't need me to play every Tuesday. It should want me to remain a Guardian for the next twenty years. Play Destiny. Go play Warframe for three months. Play FFXIV. Have a family. Work. Go to school. Touch grass occasionally. 😂 Then: Come back. Your Guardian is there. Your weapons are there. Your unfinished campaign is there. Your destinations are there. Nothing important expired because you had a life. No more: "You had to be there." Instead: "You can still be there." What Destiny Infinite is NOT It's not Destiny 3 replacing Destiny 2. It's not D1/D2/D3 executables duct-taped together. It's not playing old campaigns with obsolete gameplay systems. It's not requiring 700 GB of local storage. It's not generative AI replacing Bungie's artists and designers. And it's definitely not another excuse to rebuild the FOMO treadmill under a different name. It's one evolving Destiny platform containing different chapters of the same Guardian's history. The whole idea boils down to this: One Guardian. One Sandbox. One Universe. Every Era. The universe is permanent. The stories are portable. The story travels backward. Your Guardian does not. If you earned it once, you should never be afraid to delete it. Destiny's history is permanent. Its gameplay is never frozen in history. Maybe something like this is completely unrealistic. Maybe there are technical or financial problems I haven't remotely considered. I'm not pretending to know Bungie's codebase or Sony's finances. This is just one longtime player's idea for what I'd love the future of Destiny to become. So please tear the idea apart. What wouldn't work? What would you change? Would you pay ~$5/month if it meant Destiny could adopt a permanent FFXIV-like model? Would you rather have major expansions every 18–24 months if they were genuinely substantial and never disappeared? And most importantly: If Sony announced something like Destiny Infinite tomorrow...would you come back? THIS ISN'T JUST THE NEXT CHAPTER. THIS IS DESTINY, REBORN.

  • 1. The heck all is goin on with your formatting. This is like the opposite of a wall of text. Each sentence is isolated and separated and takes up way too much space. Ever hear of paragraphs? That aside, it really sounds less like you typed it yourself and instead had an AI like chat GPT format it for you, which is hilarious the amount of laziness you put into it. 2. This idea had already been proposed at Destiny. It’s nothing, unique, new, or “un thought of”. Hell, it even went by a similar name. 3. You need to understand how impossible it is for Bungie to ever bring back Destiny 1. It’s in its own Standalone game and it would cost development time, money, and resource Bungie clearly didn’t want to spend on porting old content into a Destiny 2 or Hypothetical D3. That’s not even including the fact that to make Destiny 2 a permanent bed for all future content, they’d of needed to build it from the ground up, stripping away the old, useless, meaningless content.

    • I am tired of releasing old content. How many times are you realistically going to play a campaign before it gets old? People just want what they can't have Imo, the most repeatable content in the game are dungeons, raids, and PVP, because of the people playing with you. People quit games when they get bored, so Bungie should have focused a LOT more on PVP and a LOT more on making the game feel "repeatable" without being tedious (your suggestions of enemies who adapt to you was a good one)

    • Not into it. At a certain point you need a reset. Loot isn’t valuable when I have 50 items in my vault that do the same exact job as the new loot. Exotics become boring. Sub-classes options become very repetitive. Not to mention the infrastructure & game engine is tired, dated, and barely holding on under its current weight. Adding to that with previous and new content would only exacerbate the issues. Also, to be fair I’m just done with this Guardian’s story and the current cast of characters. I’d just prefer a new game, with a new Guardian’s story/legend, new cast of characters - set the tone 3000 years after the events of the L&D saga. With that said, I’m not opposed to the studio continue making content for D2 - say, properly finish the fate saga - and/or making a D1 remaster to gather funds to produce a D3,4,5, etc. But ultimately I think the best thing for the franchise is a new game with new technology.

    • It's crazy people are thinking about stuff like this after they just fired all the Destiny devs. Bungie is not capable of doing anything like this, and they've already said they'd need to rebuild the older parts of the game from scratch to integrate it to the current version (which is still a buggy mess anyway). Who is supposed to work on this? The Marathon devs who are probably getting laid off soon? This would be a massive and expensive project, just to try and sell content that people have already paid for in the past. No way they put up money to do this, especially with the current issues at Sony.

      • Pulling out the receipts and gonna agree to disagree. A true MMO RPG is what this game should be. Not a multitude of launch screens. Living worlds with activities inside them you must find and engage. https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/265189620

          • Tldr Bungie ended support. Sony pulled the plug. There are other games out there and new upcoming games as well.

There’s NO new content coming. The future of Destiny is displayed when you launch the game.

          • I always thought what was going to happen was that we lost our light and our ghost could only sustain one class. Bringing the game more ‘in line’ with just about every other MMO, they could then branch out and give us reason to love an individual class. And then progress the story from there.
