Another lore theory!
In Beyond light, our ghost gets frozen. What if! That weakened his light, and he became a sort of spy for the witness. And what if! The pale heart is made from the things ghost saw/ remembered during that time. And he wasn’t normal until Cayde-6 sacrificed himself to heal him.

Guess this could be possible. The only issue is that it seems like it should take something more powerful to heal a ghost. While Clade is the most powerful of his kind, at the end he's just a robot. I think if anything healed the ghost it was Ultrim death. Ultrim is one of the Awoke people, so his death probably released a lot of the particausal energy.

So much of the Witness stuff was just ham fisted plot development. The Witness, a master of Darkness hijacks Ghosts who are made of Light? How? Strand? Mkay, so why didnt he hijack a guardian and march them in? Why rely on the greatest threat to your plan and then…do nothing to stop them before you go into the PH? He should have spanked everyone before going in, he knew we were plotting to stop him.
