Is Sony doing something illegal?

I cannot find the logic in killing destiny going all in in marathon. There has to be some underhanded illegal deal going on somewhere here. Can anyone give an insight I may not be thinking about because alienating millions of players then saying they want to focus on live service games does not compute here.

  • Continuing the development of Destiny 2 was too expensive and the game wasn’t able to sustain itself or the studio. Marathon is much narrower in scope with a significantly lower cost for ongoing development. There’s definitely an argument to be made that Bungie’s management spent far too much on unnecessary projects when income was good. But the reality still is that a large scale live service game like Destiny 2 is a money pit that needs a very large and active community to support the level of investment required. Bungie made some very, very poor choices (sunsetting, content vault etc.) that pushed many people away for good. These decisions also went a good way to destroying any positive sentiment outwith the Destiny community, making recovery or growth all but impossible. Getting to this point was inevitable due to Bungie’s past actions. Sony acquiring them just delayed things a little.

    • Is it illegal when you make stupid financial decisions, people tell you they’re stupid, and you continue to do them anyways?

    • Probably a lot of things. But that, no.

    • No, nothing illegal. Even if I hate it.

    • I don’t know if it’s been said here already…. But Sony taking a 700 million + impairment loss on Bungie will save/make them more money than D2 and D3 ever would. The most profitable way to handle Destiny was to kill it. Unfortunately it’s that simple. And all of that is not even getting into what the viability of the franchise was.

      • I couldn't care less if Marathon fails and Bungie studios are closed. I am however, rather enjoying the current Sony backlash. Gloating at the misfortune of others 😎

      •
Can anyone give an insight I may not be thinking about
Yeah that's easy. Destiny wasn't profitable enough for them to continue putting resources into it.

        • Follow the money… Sony ponied-up $3.6 billion….most of which, didn’t reach the game’s further development investment…but did go to fund the lavish lifestyle of the chosen few…allegedly?! Sony bought a 🍋 at the height of a bubble market… Sony HQ were very unhappy…so, they red-lined Bungle…only by this stage, the few who orchestrated the sale had already left, along with their big fat golden life jackets… Sony has shot themselves in the foot, as by firing most of the Destiny worker bees, the game itself will wither on the vine and eventually…become unplayable. The only saving grace that I can see is if an Eastern (Asia) gaming developer snaps it up or creates something with similar features, eg, that gatcha Destiny game. Never say never! Just my 2d worth. That is all. Ease Springs! 🖖👻 MTFBWY

        • I think that they are working on some kind of an alternative for Destiny.

That's the only logical thing left.

              • They halted destiny development due to fact the game was hemorrhaging money and hasn't made a profit or enough revenue to operate in several years, this is the most basic buisness decision to do.

                  • being illogical is not a crime. It is their ip, they can manage it as they see fit. Live service has been dead. Too expensive and the players dont really want to pay for it. Look at how Destiny's crowd react every time somethng was monetized. Selling a million or two copies once a year does not cover the dev cost plus the live services. But hey, feel free to go against Sony's law dogs

                    • The game was not profitable. When that happens, you close the shop and move on.
