Stop Penalizing Me For Leaving In-Progress Blowouts (An Open Letter to the Forum Trolls)

Before I even start, let’s get the pre-written, copy-pasted replies out of the way for the internet warriors currently cracking their knuckles in the comments: "Skill issue." "Just stick it out, bro, it builds character." "Why are you quitting? I solo-carried a 1v6 using nothing but a damaged Traveler’s Chosen last night." Now that the elite gatekeepers have their templates ready, can we talk about how absolutely miserable the leaver penalty tuning is for casual 6v6 Control? Stricter penalties make complete sense for competitive 3v3 playlists like Trials or Comp. If you drop out there, you actively ruin the match. But treating casual 6s with that same iron fist—especially when it comes to backfilling—is completely disconnected from reality. I am not investing my limited free time to join a game that is already entirely one-sided. I want to have fun, not experience a heavy-ammo-fueled defeat that frankly should have been mercied a long time ago. Nothing drains the desire to play PvP faster than flying into a match already in progress, only to immediately hear Shaxx sounding depressed, look up at the scoreboard to see a 50-point deficit, and realize the enemy team is chaining supers while your spawn is entirely trapped. Forcing a solo player to load into a dead-on-arrival match, and then threatening them with a matchmaking ban if they choose to leave, is an atrocious user experience. The casual playlist is supposed to be about jumping in, testing out builds, hitting a few clips, and having fun. It is not my job to act as free filler for a lobby that half the team already abandoned because the matchmaking broke. If a game has devolved into a one-sided stomp before a backfill even lands, forcing a fresh player to sit there and absorb a miserable defeat just to avoid a penalty is completely backwards. If the backfill system is actively pulling fresh players into lobbies where the score gap is already insurmountable, it means the Mercy Rule isn't triggering fast enough. Punishing players who choose to opt out of a fundamentally broken, unfun lobby just masks the fact that the game should have ended the match on its own five minutes ago. Bungie needs to completely exempt anyone who joins a match already in progress from leaver penalties in casual playlists. If you pull us into a game that’s already half-over and completely lopsided, we should have the right to leave without the automated system treating us like griefers. Let us look for a fresh, fun lobby instead of trapping us in a lost cause. Alright, comment section warriors... smash that reply button and tell me how I should have clutched the 20-to-90 comeback.

    • The leaving penalty is part of the game. A blowout loss you join into won't take all that long. Make your choice. Stay and deal with it or leave and deal with it. You're making the choice to jump into the dumpster fire, you know what to expect either way. 🤷

    • Just let it go my bro. You just can’t let it bother you anymore… this is what we have to work with until the Great Mountain Dew Apocalypse. Now I know the matchmaking in all its forms can be very frustrating, but at this point the biggest skill you can have is just shrugging and shaking the bull 💩 off. There is no one left to care or make changes. Soon the recent population burst will fade… so just hop in and play just to play. Get it in while you can, but without giving a f. Good luck dude.

      • No need to tell you anything. You, just like your teammates made a choice. Time to suck it up and take the penalty. People leaving when they start losing is how you get in that situation. Your situation is a product of your actions.
treating us like griefers
leaving early is griefing.
