There’s a sentiment that’s frequently stated in regard to Destiny: “There’s nothing else like it”
I’m now realizing that was fundamentally the problem. With no real competition there wasn’t any reason for leadership to get its act together. They had no reason to push Destiny to its true potential because they knew there was a dedicated player base who had no where else to go for a similar experience.
That is why they were content with a “minimum viable product”, and with stretching resources everywhere. It’s why they made such low effort in updating the beginner player experience.
It is why we saw so few enemies added to the franchise over the course of the past 12 years. It’s why we saw a decline in quantity and quality, because we were ok paying the same price anyway.
This was clearly evident when we tolerated the DCV, and the temporary nature of seasons. Because we loved Destiny and couldn’t find anything else like it, where else would we go?
We were addicted to its gameplay and universe. Many people have confessed to not playing anything else during its lifetime. Why would leadership change when they saw how much we were willing to put up with?
I’m sure others already knew this, but I realized it when seeing how Overwatch changed in response to Marvel Rivals - after years of falling into a stale pattern - they made drastic changes to meet player feedback.
A similar case can be made for ESO which has also made drastic changes to compete with other MMO and is preparing for the eventuality of TES6.
All of this to say, I hope that other studios, both major and indie, see that there’s a clear demand for something like Destiny and make a game to fill that void. Something that captures the mythic sci-fi , power fantasy, gunplay, etc. And hopefully that game has competition that pushes it to be better.
Who knows, maybe that will result in us getting a D3, maybe it won’t, but hopefully we can find our own Destiny out there.
