2 RepliesSteam and I tried epic. Both suffer. Game crashes. Game freezing my entire pc. Have had to verify game files at times to even play. Frame rates from 19fps to 240 fps(only in orbit with no menu) My average before the issue was 220fps with rarely dipping to 180fps in high traffic gameplay. Seeing a lot of teleporting enemies and players. My pc is only for playing destiny and watching streams. Have incorporated EVERY possible solutions provided with zero positive impacts. Even before this, i keep everything up to date and check weekly. Windows 11 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor AMD Ryzen 7 5700x3D 8-core 32 gb 3600 MT/s NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 ti 12GB 1TB NVMe 4.0 gen 4 Content played: vanguard playlist. Conquests. Gm alerts. It is the entire game… nothing “specific” per certain content. Thought I would share in hopes that the game would not be left like this.

Edited by ayla: 8/4/2026 8:31:38 PMI already made a post here before (https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/265296938?sort=0&page=0), but I would like to add that as others have said the solution on this github https://github.com/d2checkpoint-com/D2SteamFix has resolved most of my unplayable stuttering and fps issues.
-
Would like to confirm that D2Checkpoint's fix works perfectly for me. Stable 120 fps in Altars of Sorrow - no more stuttering.
-
This is my second post on this thread so excuse me if it's a bit much, but I can confirm that the fix provided by d2checkpoint fixed the framerate issue I've been having while playing the game through Steam, and I no longer recieve the "plum" error due to a failed BattleEye query. I hypothesize that BattleEye and the steam overlay are not cooperating well together, and this interaction could be a contributing factor to the issue. I do not have the resources or technical skill to validate this however, so I'm still going to wish you all the best in fixing this, and going forward in general. Github link to fix: https://github.com/d2checkpoint-com/D2SteamFix Reddit thread covering the idea behind the fix: https://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/1vaen8x/another_possible_steam_performance_fix/ My device's DxDiag: https://pastebin.com/ss1aF66h

I have found the issue with all overlays (volume up / down, notifications from other apps eg. teams). Once the issue occurs i need to alt-tab out of the game, alt-tab back and click and then it might be fixed. If it doesn't work then i try repeat the alt-tab system. frame rates go from +120 down to <<30 (seems like 5 or 10). Operating System: Windows 11 Pro 64-bit (10.0, Build 26200) (26100.ge_release.240331-1435) System Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. I can personally confirm that D2Checkpoint's "D2SteamFix" has doubled (and in some cases tripled) my FPS in the Steam version of D2 by disabling some busted parts of Steam Overlay that remained active even when disabled in Properties. That seems to be the root of the issue, apart from other issues that may have cropped up over the past year and a half.

12 RepliesEdited by Mikythatmona: 7/31/2026 7:46:16 AMTo everyone: I've found the main issue, desperately searching online. (Credits goes to the Dragwing aka Jergraw who posted this on Steam Forum) Steam overlay still hooks up to Destiny 2 even if it's disabled by Steam Settings. Deleting the files listed below, after starting Steam, but BEFORE starting Destiny 2, actually solve the issue. Here are the files to delete: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\gameoverlayrenderer.dll" "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\gameoverlayrenderer64.dll" "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\gameoverlayui64.exe" "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamoverlayvulkanlayer.dll" "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamoverlayvulkanlayer64.dll" I've made a custom batch files that: 1) Runs Steam 2) Delete the files 3) Launch Destiny 2 Cause this procedure must be done everytime Steam launch, cause it self repairs the missing files everytime you open Steam. Now I can peacefully play at my PC full power.

I came back after the Steam version sale for all the DLCs. When I joined the Steam version, I had heavy frame loss. Which was around ~45-80 FPS and sometimes less. It is most notable when multiple Guardians are in a session, using abilities, and a lot of NPCs in one area. It happens with abilities, multiplayer, heavy NPC areas and mostly the Moon area. I checked and updated all my drivers. Updated Windows too. Set my power plan to High Power plan. I even tried messing with settings in NVIDIA's Control Panel. I also noticed sometimes my CPU and GPU are not being fully used either. Even when I change my setting to low or high it does not change the performance. Note (Epic Games Version): I also tested the Epic Games version again. It does not have the problem for me with FPS fluctuation. The FPS did go down since the last time I played but staying around 80+ FPS.

Acer nitro 5 laptop was getting 144+ frames with some settings on highest like textures an shadows but everything else was either turned off or set to low. Was getting 144+ during episode 3 left for the 2 expansion's came back during MOT an was getting 40-60 frames. Now with this latest patch 7/28/2026 i am now getting 15-25 frames.

Steam user: I hadn't updated my PC for more than a month and wasn't affected by the Steam issue. I updated my PC yesterday and now have low fps in places I didn't before.

Platform: Steam PC specs: - RTX 5080 16 GB - Intel i7-12700 - 32 GB RAM - 5120 × 1440 resolution - Latest NVIDIA drivers I am experiencing severe performance drops in populated 6v6 PvP matches, particularly Iron Banner. In orbit I can reach around 300 FPS. In a full Control match, performance drops to roughly 60–99 FPS and can fall as low as 50–80 FPS during heavy action. GPU usage during these matches is only around 40–60%, usually approximately 55%, so the graphics card is not being fully utilised. I tested a private Control match alone on the same map using the same settings. Performance increased to approximately 130–140 FPS and GPU usage rose to around 70%. I also reduced render resolution from 100% to 50%. This caused a major reduction in image quality but made no difference to FPS, which strongly suggests this is not a GPU or resolution bottleneck. Troubleshooting already completed: - Verified Destiny 2 files through Steam - Updated NVIDIA drivers - Restarted the PC and the game - Closed nearly all background applications - Set Destiny 2 to Prefer maximum performance in NVIDIA Control Panel - Tested at 50% render resolution - Confirmed normal GPU temperatures Other demanding games, including Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, perform better and use the GPU more effectively. The issue appears to be related to populated multiplayer matches, CPU/game-thread performance, or the current Steam performance problem. The same map performs substantially better when played alone.

This happens while in Arena Ops to just running dungeons. Framerate has been all over the place as well. Sometimes its running fine, and then out of nowhere I'm getting 30fps, and then back up again. I'm not sure if the constant flux is causing the crashing or not. Just thought I'd share my info, and see if it matches others.

1. https://youtu.be/jVA-_HthMGw 2. https://pastebin.com/RNkQaJ6D 3. Platform: Steam. Every action and interaction seems to make the frames hitch and the performance dip. Shooting, getting shot at, using abilities, the more visual clutter there is on the screen makes the hitches and dips more severe. Gets worse too the faster I move and the more inputs I make. Used to run around 150-160, now it sits at around 60-75 with dips in the low 40s. 4. Luckily the hitches and dips are not getting worse than 40 fps. 5. Can't say there's any way to replicate the steps except to increase your actions per minute. The more stuff you do, the more the game hitches and dips. 6. Disabled steam overlay, set in-game settings to low except for player models, disabled game-bar across system, adjusted setting to have background apps reduce resource use when Destiny 2 is active.

So since this is a problem that only affects Steam, are you guys just gonna ignore it forever? The Moon is basically unplayable because of this, same for PVP and Distortions. This is absurdly sad, by the way.

3 RepliesDXDIAG: https://pastebin.com/8scjfDC3 Video: https://imgur.com/a/VNG6pw9 Atm the video is quite blurry due to compression and may be unusable. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1lh3EpA0Lf7g_37jSduw0qNIUDpYQmnZM?usp=sharing I know you guys specifically said to not use Google Drive, but this data is worth it in this case imo. Platform: PC · Location tested: Moon (Sorrow's Harbor public event) · Reproduced across multiple destinations Summary Since the most recent Tuesday patch, frame rate drops significantly whenever dynamic entities (enemies, spawned objects) are in view. Looking at a wall or corner with no entities restores frame rate to near-normal. The issue is not GPU-related — profiling confirms it is a CPU-side regression, most likely in how entity state, draw calls, or memory is handled per frame. Steps to reproduce: Load into any destination with ambient enemy spawns (Moon Sorrow's Harbor confirmed; reproduced on other destinations) Face toward a group of enemies or wait for a public event to begin spawning mobs Observe frame rate drop and stutter — frame time spikes visible even with FPS cap disabled Turn camera to face a wall or static geometry with no entities in frame Observe frame rate recover significantly Measured impact — PresentMon (31,662 frames, ~5 min session) 122 - avg FPS 30 - 1% low FPS 97.8% - stutter frames: CPU bottleneck 6.6ms - avg GPU time on stutter frames 29.4ms - avg CPU busy on stutter frames 70% - avg GPU utilization (not saturated) On frames where frame time exceeded 16.67ms, CPU busy time averaged 29.4ms while GPU time remained at 6.6ms — the same as smooth frames. The GPU was not the bottleneck. The 1% low FPS of 30 against an average of 122 indicates severe periodic stalls rather than a sustained throughput issue. HWiNFO sensor data: GPU temperature peaked at 58°C with no thermal throttling detected. GPU power limits were not reached. GPU shader clock was actively scaling up during the drops — the GPU was trying to find more work and wasn't being given it. Max single-thread CPU utilization hit 89% during heavy-entity periods, averaging 72% sustained. Windows Performance Recorder (WPR) — CPU Usage (Precise): A 30-second WPR trace (CPU Usage Precise) was captured during active stutter. destiny2.exe process (PID 45048) showed the following on its primary hot thread (TID 58,772): Thread 58,772 CPU cycles used: 100,741 Ready time (µs): 792,672,700 ← thread wants to run but can't get scheduled Waits (µs): 4,460,807,600 Call stack root: └─ ntdll.dll <Symbols disabled> CPU cycles: 98,376 / 100,741 (97.7% of thread cost) Ready time: 780,288,500 µs ├─ destiny2.exe <Symbols disabled> — 1,193 cycles ├─ ?!? (unresolved module) — 1,152 cycles ├─ GameOverlayRenderer64.dll — 5 cycles └─ ntoskrnl.exe — 13 cycles The thread's Ready time (792ms out of the trace window) is far larger than its actual CPU execution time, indicating the thread is being queued by the Windows scheduler faster than CPU cores can service it. This is consistent with either a high-frequency polling/wake-up loop or a lock contention point introduced in the patch. Because Destiny 2's symbols are private, the exact game-side function calling into ntdll.dll cannot be resolved from this trace — but ntdll at this volume typically indicates heap allocation pressure. (RtlAllocateHeap/RtlFreeHeap) or critical section contention (RtlEnterCriticalSection). Hypothesis: The patch likely changed something in how entity state is batched, allocated, or synchronized per frame. The directional nature of the bug (camera angle matters, not player position) points to draw call submission or visibility culling as the trigger ; the game is doing significantly more CPU work per frame when non-static entities are in the view frustum. This was not the case before Tuesday's patch. Possible causes: increased per-frame heap allocations for spawned entity data; a new or unintentionally un-parallelized lock on the render or simulation thread; a change to entity tick rate or LOD evaluation frequency. System specs CPU: 8-core (16 threads), boosting to 5215 MHz · GPU: AMD Radeon (RX 7000 series inferred from HWiNFO MCD sensor layout) · RAM: ~36GB in use during session · GPU VRAM: ~4GB allocated to Destiny 2 · OS: Windows (confirmed via ntdll/ntoskrnl in trace).

2 RepliesI've installed Epic version and recorded a comparison. 1 ReplyEdited by Dredgen: 7/17/2026 4:18:14 PMMy specs: 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-12700H - RAM: 16 GB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 - VRAM: 4 GB I turned off the steam overlay and it did not help at all. I have not turned it back on. I cant break 60 FPS anywhere except in orbit, where my frames reach 120. PVP is unplayable even after i limited FPS to 36 i still get micro stutters and and frame drops, that are as low as 26. I am a returning player. the only activities i finished were the renegade and light fall campaigns they ran okay, but the new renegade weapons every time i reload one of them my fps would drop low to 26 especially when there are enemies present. I tried playing the final shape campaign but it runs too poorly to even slog through, Most encounters in the final shape have fps reader stuck at 26 frames zooming in with a sniper causes the game to stutter even worse then it already is. normal campaign sections and the dungeons that I have played mainly grasp of avarice and Equilibrium ran okay. I am upset, because I was so excited to return to the game, and I even bought all of the DLCs, but i cant even play some of them like the final shape, because the game runs too poorly. Please update us it has been nearly 3 weeks.

Occasionally occurs in strikes, but not common enough to be replicable. Does not occur in Dungeon content or Tower instances. Fixes: No consistent fix availible, although I have noticed it doesn't occur all the time. I suspect it has something to do with servers. Perhaps Bungie has taken server away from Destiny 2 or downscaled it's server operation to a lower band for cost saving.

Sorry to be lazy but I just want to share that this is 100% a Steam issue, which sucks because all of my licenses are there. I installed D2 on Epic and it is smooth like before. My issue on Steam is not so much the framerate, but the frame pacing / microstutters. I only get 10-15fps less (which is considerable don't get me wrong) but the stuttering makes it feel even worse. On Epic there are no stutters AND better framerate. Please fix this, or allow us Steam users to transfer our licenses to other launchers. Specs: i7 11700F XFX 9060 XT 16GB 16GB DDR4 3600 ASUS B560M-A Prime Windows 11 64-bit Epic - average FPS ~125-130 perfect framepacing Steam - average FPS ~110-115 micro stutters galore.

Steam is suffering worse than other platforms like epic and xbox, much much worse, but this performance has been pretty typical for me since EoF. PLEASE BRING BACK EXCLUSIVE FULLSCREEN. There was no reason to remove it. Ever since its been removed the game has been total jank for me on every platform. Raids, crucible , anything where I actually have to hit my shots is unplayable and unfortunately its looking like the easiest fix to this issue is being overlooked. If you want to fix >60% of the playerbases performance issues (frame pacing, stutters, mouse lag etc.) just add exclusive fullscreen back. Its a no brainer and makes no sense as to why it was removed in the first place.
