As a long-time fan of Bungie, it's difficult to watch what has happened to a studio that once stood at the forefront of creativity in gaming. The company that gave us Marathon, Halo, and the early years of Destiny built its reputation on ambitious ideas, unforgettable worlds, and a willingness to take risks that other developers wouldn't.
Looking at the layoffs and the turmoil surrounding the studio, I don't believe the blame lies with the artists, writers, designers, programmers, and countless other developers who dedicated years of their lives to creating these games.
Instead, it feels like Bungie gradually drifted away from the values that made it special. Somewhere along the way, the focus shifted from creating legendary experiences to chasing industry trends, engagement metrics, and the endless demands of the live-service model. The people who poured their passion into these games are now paying the price for decisions that were made far above their heads, and that's a tragedy not only for them but for the gaming industry as a whole.
What concerns me most is that Bungie appears to be standing at a crossroads. Marathon represents an opportunity to rediscover the spirit that once made the studio unique, but only if it remembers what the original Marathon meant to players.
Bungie's greatest successes were never built on monetisation strategies or retention charts; they were built on imagination, atmosphere, mystery, and gameplay that inspired people to think, discuss, and dream long after they had put the controller down. The industry is overflowing with companies chasing the same trends, copying the same formulas, and competing for the same attention spans.
What made Bungie legendary was its willingness to do something different. I hope the studio survives this difficult period, and I hope the talented developers affected by the layoffs find success wherever they go. More than anything, I hope Bungie remembers that players fell in love with its games because they felt like works of passion and vision, not products designed by committee.
Gaming doesn't need another corporation trying to maximize engagement; it needs studios willing to create worlds that people will still be talking about twenty years from now.
