The introduction of pve to Marathon has hurt the game, and there's more to come. Season 1 of Marathon was incredibly engaging and fun to play. I understand that the game may have alienated some people with it's hardcore pvp focus, but it was never meant to be an 'everything-game'. It was a streamlined and simple gameplay experience that somehow never felt stale, mostly due to the risk of other players. Runs were unpredictable, so banal tasks became exciting.
At launch I loved season 2, however it became very clear very quickly that if you wanted to progress efficiently you needed to spam the survival mode. The best players maxed out their cradle progression immediately through this mode, then bungie nerfed it screwing the rest of the player base. This further pushed us into playing the survival mode so we could all safely progress, effectively taking us out of the regular matchmaking pool.
Now without the threat of other players making the progression feel more meaningful, it started to feel like a grind. So my friends and I stopped playing. That's not to say we won't play, but the gameplay loop now feels broken and inconsequential. And now we are getting a pve version of the most engaging content in the game, cryo archive. But this content isn't good because of some difficult mechanic or mobs, it was the constant threat of other players. I don't think the subroutines will feel as meaningful to earn if I can just load into cryo without the concern of making it out.
This game wasn't designed for pve, so when the threat of other players is removed the gameplay won't feel meaningful to engage with. I understand the player count is low, but it doesn't seem like survival brought players in. The play bungie should have made was to just keep developing this as an intense pvp experience, and show everyone how good the game is. Bungie had clear intentions from the start that this was going to be a pvp game, but now they are getting bullied by redditors into making another 'everything game'.

Edited by Northern: 6/25/2026 4:21:35 AMThe inclusion of pve into Marathon smacks of desperation. I suspect we are now seeing the begining of the end for Bungies latest, and perhaps final IP. Currently less than 8k concurrent players on steam with a 24 hour peak of 9100. Embarrassing. 🤦♂️

Now that Sponsored Survival has been removed from Perimeter the player population will decline substantially. If Bungie wants the game to succeed over the long term, it must have separate activities that include PvE, PvP, and hybrid. Like other forum members on Reddit, I myself had a losing streak this morning. I noticed the gamertags of the enemy players were those I had lost to previously over the past few weeks. With their higher tiered gear, skill, and experience they destroy teams of random players. Bungie does not understand that making the game more difficult results in lost players and giving Marathon a bad reputation. They will not learn until the game fails. Then they will reflect on the loss with a woulda, coulda, shoulda perspective.
This game wasn't designed for pve
Yes, it was. I just think it's coming too early, but I don't think Bungie or Ziegler have a choice in the matter now. And PvE has been, and will continue to be popular which will drive resources there. Same pattern as Destiny & D2. Hopefully not. Hopefully they'll still get the resources they need to dial in the PvP.
