Why stop the best FPS MMO on the market?

I do not understanding why Bungie or Sony would go years ignoring what Destiny 2 players want from the game then just stop supporting the live service because they weren't getting the numbers they wanted.. Then, like an insult to every player that has been loyal to Destiny, they want to give some of the things that players have been asking from for years. First of all, Bungie, Sony, do you hate money, or you just hate yourself? You give up on a game that has always made you good money, for a game that will be completely dead within a year? What is wrong with you? Are you using AI to make your business decisions for you because this makes no logical sense to me.

  • What did the "players" want and can they confirm that in writing? I mean, all of them.

The issue is that Bungie tried to "cap" the fun the entire game. Until the end, it was always about "player engagement" or some such nonsense. Ironically, it was only when Bungie removed the FOMO, made all weapons desirable, and removed much of the grind that players really started coming back. Heck, they even added a way to farm for eververse sets! Shocker! Players who have fun stick around. It should not have taken this final update to wake up to that reality.

      • If it made them good money, they wouldn't have shut it down. I get people are mad at Sony etc but realistically we wouldn't have even gotten Final Shape without the acquisition.

        • Sony and Bungle are in the process of a bitter divorce after Marathon didn't save the marriage and D2 was the child caught in the middle.

        • Because they have no idea how to manage their assets. You make a great game and people show up. Companies take great games and then monetize the crap out of them until everybody leaves. Their world is upside down and they have no idea how to manage what they even own. Concord is an obvious example. Integrating Star Wars into an expansion was a desperation move and that's it. Bungie started off with Halo as a boots on the ground making games for gamers and now it's completely the opposite. They don't understand this and they will never understand this and that's why games get so big that they have to die eventually. Because rich idiots do what rich idiots do.

        • There’s a 40’ min documentary on Destiny franchise that explains a lot. TLDR: Bad management, and greedy Pete and his car collection.

          • MMO is a bit of a stretch. Not even bungie was sure of what to make it, they started just copying fortnite once the star wars stuff started entering the store. As for the best I'm sorry but that's your opinion. I admit it's good but I'm tired of people saying it's the absolute best or there's nothing like it when believe it or not there is plenty out there like destiny. Some of them are actually better or do things much better. Destiny isn't the only game on the market and even as a fan for 11-12 years I never once saw what made it the best. It was just an average game, a really good average game but still a game nonetheless. Think about it unless you were an active fan or watched some of the content you would have never heard of the gane. There are players still today who are brand new who have never heard of it. But you do hear about every other game so that says a lot.

          • Because Destiny 2 has been dropping players and hasn’t been bringing in sufficient income for a long time. Sony have basically decided that it’s not recoverable. All of Bungie’s hopes were put on Marathon. So if that doesn’t pick up dramatically (and it doesn’t look like it will) then it’ll be lucky to get past its first birthday. And Bungie will be lucky to still exist in anything more than name.

          • Maybe, Sony could ask another studio if they decide to make D3 and let Bungie have Marathon.

          • It was not long ago that A LOT of players wanted Sony to dismantle/take over Bungie. 🤔 That was like what? A month or so ago? Well... Wish granted!! Besides that, there's the business side of things sony lost almost a billon on Bungie so it's not surprising it's getting the axe now.

There's been nothing official about the future of the studio or the franchise. When everyone rational is saying it doesn't make sense, Sony will have to answer for that because they own less than 10% of their company. These Sony executives must understand that. And... PR is a factor, the PR has been great for D2... the metrics are great. And Asmon might be on his hero arc, as he's considering playing the game. Because of the single sku, the best decision that should have began when Sony acquired Bungie. You know ESO? How that game survives? It's mid, I played a bit. The core of their monetization is this, Every deluxe expansion comes with everything that proceeded it bundled with it. And D2 should have been doing that a long time ago. Why not annual, releases every 1-2 years with this strategy? With simplified skus. That makes sense to me. 😇👍💠 To add: I want to put it in perspective, for most of the stuff we were getting, they were on a 3 month development cycle. This latest update, they had 6 months... Maybe they need a year or two between major releases... and then that's basically it until the next, then the next... I'd vibe with that.

            • Purely a business decision, Destiny wasn't making enough money. Might explain why Bungo almost went broke back in 2022. Fortunately, Sony stepped in and bought them.

            • Years of failing profits and mismanagement. Destiny 2 just hasn't been bringing in the money so Sony are done with it.
