Since The Edge of Fate and the introduction of The Portal the game has been in a spot where, at least for me, just the sight of the Portal screen is enough to make me close the game just after launching it. I have been thinking about possible changes that imho coule improve the current situation, event though I have almost no longer faith in the devs:
1. Loot
Armor set bonuses are a great addition, maybe the best in that expansion. The problem here is the concept of "tiers", which quickly became the old blue engrams if the tier is below 5. The fix here would be to remove tiers and return to the old weapon levelling system. By spending resources we could improve all the columns and feeling the weapon that upgrades with us and this way we would not discard weapons solely based on the tier of that item. For armors, I don't have suggestions about their stats, but they could maybe linked to the difficulty (classic and master, just like before, and maybe adding more archetypes to make available more options. Also get rid of that damn new gear bonus, volatile mods are already enough for running new gear.
2. Difficulty
Right now difficulty is in a really weird spot due to the possibility to choose difficulty + modifiers. This is not working because lowest difficulty are not played because they give low tier loot, so we are forced to only play Ultimate difficulty. My suggestion here would be to get rid of all that difficulties and modifiers and return to a fixed weekly/daily set of modifiers for each activitity. For difficulties, return to the classic normal/expert and add a heroic variant for strikes. You can make drop regular loot in normal difficulties and a small amount of upgrading resources and more loot and upgrading resources in heroic variant.
3. Vendors
Vendors lost all their identities with The Edge of Fate. They need to return to their old function of focussing gear. Old engram system was good enough, it just needed some adjustment: every activity run should drop 1-3 engrams which can then be focussed in any piece of loot from that activity. The problem was the hoarding and I have no solutions for that, but at least vendors still had a meaning and the Tower felt more alive. Moreover, loot pools should be periodically updated (for example, every new expansion)
4. Destinations
Not much to say here, destinations are always neglected after their release and this needs to be addressed. New public events (which should definetly be changed since they are too useless), patrol events, updated loot are needed. They should be the foundation of the game together with ritual activities
5. Raid&Dungeons
They are already going to be updated and the feat system is good, but it's too linked to the tier system which should be removed together with the current Portal
6. Portal
Imho the Portal should coexhist with the Navigator, which should be again the main focus. Portal should only include old seasonal activities and be a way to get old seasonal loot together with the Portal, which is fine, but it definetly cannot substitute seasonal activities. The main problem is that the current Portal is designed as a way to avoid creation of new activities.
I know these are speculations, but it would be a good start. Any suggestions on what you would change?
