First of all, I want to say that Destiny 2 has been an outstanding game for many years. At the time it released — and especially during its best DLC periods — it stood far above many other games in terms of replayability, loot balance, challenge, and overall quality across all activities, whether missions, strikes, raids, or PvP (especially PvP).
Because of that, it’s hard to watch what has been happening in recent years.
I don’t know whether the right people were let go during the layoffs that started before The Final Shape, but from a player’s perspective it sometimes feels like the time, loyalty, and money that the community invests into the game are no longer truly valued.
To me, Bungie used to be a studio driven by passion. You were the best of the best. It felt like you genuinely cared about what you were creating and didn’t just see the financial side. It felt like we were one community — developers and players together.
I understand that a project like Marathon demands a lot of time and energy. But it’s difficult to accept that a fanbase, which helped build Bungie into what it is today (a company acquired for billions), now feels pushed aside. From the outside, it feels disrespectful to see a game that has inspired millions, helped people through difficult times, and brought so much joy slowly lose its priority.
I want to be clear: this is not directed at the developers or the regular employees. I know they work hard and give their best every day. My criticism is aimed at leadership and the direction being taken.
From my point of view, the leadership has made several poor decisions. Where are the meaningful updates? It’s hard to believe that community feedback is truly being heard when so little of it seems to translate into visible change. You give us platforms to speak, but it often feels like no one is really listening.
Do you truly believe Marathon can replace Destiny 2? I often wonder how the decision was made that an extraction shooter should take priority over a game that still has such a strong and dedicated player base. Destiny 2 has been a major pillar for years, and it feels like it’s being treated more like a resource than a priority.
There are countless things that could be improved to bring more excitement and interest back into the game. Many players have been saying this for years, but it often feels like talking to a wall.
Again, I want to stress my respect for the programmers and the people doing the day-to-day work. This is not directed at them. But the people making the big decisions should take a step back, reflect, and think carefully about the long-term impact.
One major point that needs to be addressed is PvP.
If the goal is to maintain a large, active player base, then PvP needs real attention again. PvE can keep players engaged to a certain extent, but in Destiny 1 especially, PvP carried the game for long stretches and kept people coming back. That same energy and focus is missing now.
We need fresh metas. We need meaningful changes. Players are tired of the same cycles and forced metas repeating for years. Please stop pushing what you think is best and start focusing more on what the majority of players are asking for.
It feels like nothing has been learned from the past, and that’s what frustrates many of us the most.
A lot has changed at Bungie over the years — and from a player’s perspective, not all of it has been for the better.
