How to ruin a "fun" event
1. Make a PVP element that requires wins to earn/gild the title
That's it. That's all you ever have to do.
Oh, and throw in the following to really make it painful:
2. Bungie's legendary team balancing that puts players on massive losing streaks against some seriously sweaty opponents.
3. Weapon mods that allow for weapons that should not 1-shot, to now 1-shot in PVP.

The long cheating issue still remains, and worse, outlier protection guaranteed to matchmake against the cheaters. Either make PVP entirely optional, or bring back skill-based. Period
