Easy fix, just make getting kills add more time to timer. No timer in traversal areas where there are no enemies. No timers where we are waiting for a door to open. I would personally like timers to be optional. I do not like to be timed and would rather explore at my leisure.

Yes, they do. But they're nothing new to gaming either. I do like your idea about kills extending the timer, although I'd limit that to orange and yellow bar enemies. Removing it from traversal zones seems like a bridge too far.
