idk how hot of a take it is but i think darth maul caused the mandalorian purge. when he fought sidious in the clone wars he lost which made sidious the rightful ruler of mandalore since he won the darksaber in combat. but maul kept it and eventually lead to the empire destroying mandalore. had sidious taken the darksaber he wouldve had mandalore side with the empire and any loyal mandalorians wouldve followed as their code says which obviously wouldnt have resulted in the night of a thousand tears. either way the ownership of the darksaber had been broken since maul lost to sidious even tho sidious clearly had no interest in the darksaber or mandalore
