With the theme of this exotic being grenades and subclass keywords, I think it should count all damage dealt as done by a grenade.
Sort of like how the "Face Puncher" shotgun in Borderlands counts each hit as melee damage, but doesn't necessarily benefit from everything related to melee or weapons, Tesselation should be the same way but for grenade damage instead. 
It could benefit from both enhanced Weapons and enchanted Grenade stats, and subclass related fragments and aspects such as Ember of Resolve and Electrostatic Mind. 
The "Property: Irreducible" shot should have additional capabilities such as the ability to function with things like Spark of Shock and Echo of Undermining, Firepower, Bolstering Detonation, and ability/grenade-related exotic armor perks.
