In no particular order:
• The Haunting (1967), one of the best horror movies ever made in my opinion, best watched without a cellphone in hand, it holds up surprisingly well.
• The Blair Witch Project (1999), especially spooky if you live in the woods, the original found footage horror movie, lots of paranormal tension.
• Paranormal Activity (2009), nice and spooky if you're into ghost stories, a fantastic companion for The Haunting and Blair Witch, the low-tech special effects enhance the spookiness.
• The fall of the House of Usher (2023), an anthology series by Mike Flanagan, great story telling, each episode retells a story from Edgar Allan Poe, but in the modern world.
• Limetown (2019), part horror, part mystery, I do a yearly re-listen to the podcast, it's just damn near perfect, I don't want to spoil anything, but it's a fantastic listen.
• The Magnus Archives (2016), another podcast and anthology series, spooky stories with fairly compelling acting, good for background noise, good for dedicated listening.
• The Simposons: Tree House of Horror (Various), what can I say? I'm a millennial! I just like the stories, they always put me in the Halloween mood.
Edit:
• House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski is trippy and weird, but in the best ways. Best if you can find it in paperback, the digital editions don't really do it justice. It'll linger.
• White Horse by Alex Adams is another good book, also trippy, cosmic horror in its way. She's got some of the best prose I've read, very stark and succinct.
What's on your list?

Paranormal Activity 3 is the best of the franchise imo. Not that there’s much competition beyond the first one. Evil Dead (the remake) is my favourite horror movie, and easily in my top 10 films of all time.

14 RepliesEdited by The First Aifos: 10/25/2025 2:40:28 PMVideo games: I don't play too many horror games, but there are a few I like. -Little Nightmares 1 & 2 are very good. Haven't gotten around to 3 yet. I'm still wrapping up Silksong. Very dark and creepy atmosphere, and they aren't very gory which is a big thing for me. I cannot play gory games. -Doki Doki Literature Club is a great [totally normal dating sim] about [writing poems for cute girls]. It is very [chill and cozy], and I highly recommend. -Slay the Princess was very nice as well. It was a little bit above my usual gore threshold, and I had to physically look away from the screen at some parts, but it was simultaneously horrifying, hilarious, and sweet all at the same time. I also just barely picked up Little Goody Two Shoes, but no idea how good it is yet. When I was little, I also used to make a habit of playing through all the spooky themed Sonic levels. Alas, the newer Sonic games don't tend to have them, and I don't have easy access to my favorite old Sonic games. We need a Heroes and Shadow '05 port. TV episodes: -Fear Itself & Haunted are two pretty spooky episodes of Teen Titans '03. Both are some of my favorite episodes in the entire show. -Keeping It Together in Steven Universe has, to this day, what I consider to be the most horrifying scene I've seen in any media. Yes, even scarier than plenty of actual horror titles. Unfortunately, it's only really scary with the context of the series, so watching it on its own is pretty meh. -Pure Echo from Flip Flappers is such a fun episode. They just take all the characters and throw them into a nightmare school, and it is very creepy. I love it. -There was a really great comedy horror episode of The Amazing World of Gumball. I think it was called The Joy? Very funny, poking fun at horror. Movies: -Coraline is a very good movie. The scene with the ghost kids always feels a little off, but other than that, I love this movie to death. Very fun. Books: -Hypnagogia, by Michael Simpson. Kinda this weird trippy surrealism to it. Bit of a rough start, but I do recommend. Good fun.

I'm not a huge fan of horror movies, but The Relic and Event Horizon are two I'll watch over and over. Creepshow 1 and 2, as well as Hellraiser, deserve a spot too. Nightmare Before Christmas is one of my Halloween season favourites, although it definitely doesn't fall into the horror genre. Same with the first two Alien movies.

5 RepliesEdited by jmann43b: 10/29/2025 7:47:47 PMWow, this would take soooo long for me to list since I'm a fan of horror in general but I'll try to keep it brief: This Halloween I'm going for a musical trifecta, and I've watched 2 out of 3 being 'Repo: The Genetic Opera' and 'Little Shop of Horrors.' All that remains is 'Rocky Horror' for the Triple Crown. I also watched 'Phantoms' a few days ago and while it's not as good as the Dean Koontz novel, I've always enjoyed the movie. I'm looking forward to 'It: Welcome to Derry' and 'Talamasca' this weekend as well. Too many others to list really, so I'll just leave it with those. Fair warning though, it's entirely possible I'll feel compelled to add more and this response will turn into a grocery list of Halloween favorites of mine. Edit: Oops, just thought of 2: 'In the Mouth of Madness' and 'Event Horizon.' - 'The Thing' -'Village of the Damned' - 'I, Zombie' Not scary but definitely worth a watch. - 'The Monster Squad'

2 RepliesI like Horror, but it needs the right elements, otherwise it just becomes a supersoakerfest of gore. Mandy (2018, Nicholas Cage) is good Horror.
