Bring back Pathfinder
Instead of the portal modifiers bring back Pathfinder.
Instead of running the same activity over and over, give us passive ways to progress.
If you want, include special nodes that require unique activities that require additional challenges but reward additional gear.
If a player completes all the nodes before resetting they could receive additional rewards as well.
This gives players a better, more varied and relaxed way to progress. It also rewards those who want a challenge with more gear and faster progression.

I think your idea could work with Bounties, too. "Complete a Solo Op with Modifier X" would be a perfect fit for the classic Bounty system. Or both! We could have both Bounties AND Pathfinder, no reason they need to be mutually exclusive! I'll be honest: I only really use the modifiers to boost my score, I don't find them very fun in and of themselves, they add some variety to the runs but not a whole lot, I'm not sure the Modifiers add much to the game except to slow us down slightly. Picking modifiers before a match is just a matter of finding what gets me a B+ or an A, it feels like busy work. Pathfinder was passive, Bounties were a bit more active, Bungie has ways of making us mix up our runs, but the Modifiers... I really feel nothing about the Modifiers.
