I’ve really tried to give the new Portal system a fair shot, but at this point, I have to say: it’s not fun, it’s not rewarding, and it makes the power grind feel worse than ever.
Here’s what isn’t working:
1. The Portal System Kills Variety
Everything is being funneled through this rigid structure. Solo Ops, Fireteam Ops, etc. and it ends up feeling repetitive fast. There's very little room to experiment or play how I want. The curated activities and modifiers are limiting, not liberating. Destiny used to let us choose our own path through its content. Now it feels like we’re being forced down a narrow hallway every season.
2. The Rewards Are Just Not Worth It
High-difficulty content through the Portal should be exciting and lucrative. Instead, I get the same underwhelming loot with barely any meaningful progression. If I’m pushing into Expert or Master tiers, I expect something more than a couple of engrams I could’ve gotten faster elsewhere. What’s the point of engaging with this system when the rewards are worse than just playing legacy content?
3. The Power Grind Feels Worse Than Ever
Resetting power and tying it into this seasonal bonus system just makes the grind exhausting. It’s not satisfying or skill based, it’s pure busywork. Bungie keeps talking about respecting players’ time, but this system does the opposite. We spend hours grinding out seasonal power just to be allowed into higher tier content, and the payoff isn’t there.
4. Modifiers Feel Like a Chore, Not a Challenge
Some of the modifiers are just annoying not challenging, just frustrating. It doesn’t feel like they’re enhancing the gameplay loop. They’re making content artificially harder in ways that suck the fun out rather than increase the intensity.
At the end of the day, the Portal feels like a solution to a problem that didn’t exist. We already had access to these types of activities. Now it’s just locked behind layers of systems, UI changes, and grind heavy requirements. It’s less Destiny, and more an MMO checklist.
Please consider rolling back the Portal system. Let us play how we want, earn loot in fun ways, and grind power without it feeling like a full time job.

I enjoy the rotation in portal. Perfect when you just want to jump on for little and just play

I like some of the portals approach, the ability to quickly do a coupla daily solo ops etc. But you are absolutely right with your points. I recently started new characters on ps5(my regulars are on xbox) just to replay old campaigns, and what a waste of time that was. Anything outside the portal has negligible rewards. If its not an event, forget it. Got to 330 and struggling to log in.

The portal system was probably the idea of someone influential. They'll loathe letting it go. More likely they twist and writhe around trying to do anything with it then remove it because removing it will be a mark on their report card that they did something bad.

Yeah… I’m willing to bet that if numbers continue to drop and opinions on it don’t improve even in Renegades, they’ll drop the system entirely… It just ruins the magic and feeling of a living world + it overly focuses on modifiers and power disparities to receive viable loot.

Edited by Solemniis: 9/14/2025 2:38:07 PMAbsolutely. Abolish the portal, and make +3 drops guaranteed from every completed activity and Raid and dungeon round completion, with a chance for +4 or +5 Make +3 drops a possibility from Heroic PE completions, and rare drop from patrol completion and guaranteed +3 drop or rare +4 drop from VSF or equivalent in any other PZ. Guaranteed drop +5 from completion of full Overthrow sequence with +1 drops from round completion. Guaranteed +4 from Excision. These suggestions will make the respective areas relevant again and give variety for both solo and mp players.

Agreed. The ‘Destinations’ tab with all the planets is what makes Destiny unique. Why abandon it?
-
100%, especially when it comes to the modifiers.
-
Really we should all be praising it and using it as much as possible and say it’s lots of fun why, because bungie nerfs and fix’s things that are fun it’ll then be removed because we’re enjoying so much 🙄.

the fact destiny rising has a "portal menu" and its literally just a menu and not some nightfall card bullshit everything is a GM system still baffles me having a portal screen UI is a nice idea. making it THE WHOLE GAME just to funnel paid players into the fake free to play mmo is astounding. i cant stand it anymore

Portal was a mistake, a big one, but they can defo make it better now its here. I'd still abolish it from my own pov.

The graphs show this should be working though! It's the players fault

While I can understand a lot of frustrations within the portal system. And don't worry I have a lot myself. Bear in mind if they hadn't added the portal in, then the first update would have been edge of fate campaign and that's it. And ash and iron would have been that activity that's it. Like I said there are so many bugs and the grind is ridiculous and at times boring. Pinnacle times are way to quick now and presage is impossible. On the good side though. I like that there is a way to get armor pieces or weapons on first run of activities.

Can we be honest for a moment and acknowledge that no matter what Bungie does, it'll always be wrong? I'm not saying that as an indicator of fault with them either, but with the players; nothing will ever suffice.
