• Full episode: Infinity Train, Season 1: The Ball Pit Car Major spoiler warning
The premise of Infinity Train is that there's this magic train that people can find themselves on in extraordinary circumstances. When they wake up there, they have a number on their hand, and when that number hits 0 they get to go home. How to get it to 0? Through PERSONAL GROWTH! The number each person is assigned is basically a representation of their problems, and it goes down as they go through their character arcs and learn to become better people. Swell. Each car on the train is a little pocket dimension, and our heroes, Tulip, Atticus, and One-One have just stumbled in one that's basically a gigantic play place. Y'know, like those playgrounds fast food places have? Yeah, one of those. And this one has a ball pit! So, they do the only logical thing, and hop in to play. There they find a little stuffed bunny asking for help. He needs to get the almighty Jiggle Wiggle--one of those toys that slips out of your hand when you try to grab it--to the top of the play place, but doing so involves overcoming several perilous obstacles... But, it's obviously all just pretend. They're going through the playground, everyone's having fun, and they get the Jiggle Wiggle back to its place, and are given the Jiggle Wiggle as a prize. Everyone's laughing, having a good time, and then, the Steward shows up. A horrible mechanical beast with an uncountable many tendrils... The rabbit wants to continue their game, but Tulip shushes him and tells him this is serious, and they try to sneak away. Unfortunately, the Jiggle Wiggle slips out of their hands, gets crushed by the Steward, and then gets them discovered. Atticus attacks, but is easily knocked aside, and then a new threat enters the room and blasts him with a cannon. Atticus is transformed into a horrible monster that attacks Tulip and the others with reckless abandon. Tulip manages to trap him, but for all intents and purposes, Atticus is dead. Tulip screams at the enemy, who then reveals themselves to be the Conductor, and that they're after One-One. Tulip tells One-One to run, and he flees back into the play place, while the Conductor commands their other underling--The Cat--to chase after him. When she does so, the Steward opens up a pair of machine guns, and rapid fires at the play place, destroying the whole thing with One-One and The Cat inside. Tulip screams out in agony, and the Conductor leaves. For a moment, Tulip is alone, but then One-One rolls out of the wreckage as she cries. Even though he's okay, Atticus is still dead, and not only that, but Tulip doesn't know the purpose of the train. She was seeking the Conductor for a way home, but now, her entire adventure is hopeless... The Ball Pit Car is simply amazing. I don't remember where Tulip's number was at at this point, but it was really low. Like, 3. She was basically done with her character arc, and this car seemed to be a way of showing that. It was simple, and happy, and everything was fine. Then, it all turns around and falls apart in an instant. It went from the happiest moment to the darkest hour in an instant, and that contrast made the shift all the more impactful. The reveal that, uh-oh, the Conductor is a bad guy was also a big deal. Finding the Conductor was our goal, that's what we wanted to do, that was our only way forward... And it turns out, that's a dead end, and now, it seems like there's no way forward. This episode started on an extremely light-hearted, and happy note ends completely hopeless. And I love it.
Scene: The Owl House, Season 2 (I think): Reaching Out Still spoiler warnings, but a bit less severe
Luz had been avoiding something all day. We knew this, but we didn't know what, or why. Amity had come to her with a problem, and after a series of events, they snuck off to this fighting tournament that Amity was trying to win. At first it was going well, but then Luz tried to join in herself, and then Amity's guardian robot thing came back to find her and Luz set off its alarm, and when Amity asked about it, Luz lied and said she didn't do anything. They continue with the fighting tournament, only Amity's dad--who didn't want her participating--shows up, and the whole thing falls apart. Amity gets in trouble with her dad, she's mad at Luz for lying to her, and she runs off and hides. Luz eventually goes to find her, and then Amity confronts her with all of this. She confronts her with how weird she's been acting, about how she lied, about how she kinda sabotaged the tournament, and Luz finally comes clean. She hands Amity her phone, and tells her that this the anniversary of the day her dad died, and that normally, she and her mum would go pick flowers to celebrate, but this year she's in this alternate dimension and can't see her mum, and she's basically just been a wreck all day. She starts to break down and apologize, but when she turns to Amity, Amity has this horrified look on her face. Like she had no idea Luz was going through something so difficult, and you can tell just from her expression that it all hit her really deep. There's a scream in the distance. Amity gets up to investigate, but Luz is so wrecked that she can't even stand up. Amity pauses, and the shouts: "I don't know what kind of traditions you have in the human realm, but I'll help you pick some flowers, and we'll do something here!" before running off. This scene is just really sweet. You can really see how much both of them really, truly care of each other. I love it.
