Good evening everybody! This is Aifos coming to you alive from the Unknown! I'd better talk fast, because I doubt I'll remain alive for long. Next time you see me, I'll probably be a tree.
But that's besides the point!
So, while at work, I like to listen to old shows I've watched in the past while I'm working. It's a good way to keep my brain from wandering off, and just focus on the task at hand, and as a bonus perk, it keeps a lot of my favorite shows fresh in mind, since I'm literally watching them on repeat! (I've got, like, 16 shows on this list presently, so don't worry, I'm still mixing them up, not just watching the same handful over and over!)
Of course there's a catch, and that catch is I can only do this with shows that are on iTunes. This means there are some really great shows, like Hilda or Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood that I can't add to this list. For a long time, this also included Over the Garden Wall. While it was listed on the iTunes store, it for whatever reason wasn't available to purchase. And then it was. I just got through my first re-listen of it today, and man, what a great show!
If you don't know, Over the Garden Wall is a sort of mini-series put out by Cartoon Network. It's only got 10 eleven minute episodes. Very short, I'm pretty sure I started and finished it all in a day at work. But sweet baby corn, those 10 episodes are great!
It follows the adventure of two brothers, Wirt and Greg, who are lost in a dark spooky wood, trying to get home. The entire show has this really great vibe going on, where it's simultaneously dark and spooky, but also kind of whimsical and fun... Sort of. All of the whimsical bits of the show feel very... Off. Nothing in the Unknown feels right. And this permeates not just the writing, but the animation as well. This kind of "dark whimsy" is really rare, but it is such a fun vibe when I do see it. Don't Starve is another good example of it.
One thing that surprised me upon this re-listen is the show is a lot more musical than I remember. A good amount of the episodes have musical numbers, and while they're often pretty fun, and sound quite good, they all still have that feeling to them that the rest of the show does, that it feels very off. There are songs like the one linked above that do just kind of have this dark tone to them, but there are also plenty that don't. There are these gentle songs that would feel really soothing out of context, but that they exist in this relatively dark world adds an unsettling undertone to them. (I would link one, but spoilers)
I wouldn't say the show ever went full blown horror, this unsettling vibe the show carries with it makes it a great watch around Halloween.
While the show can feel a bit "sidequesty" if that sort of thing bothers you, I really enjoyed how each episode was kind of about exploring a different location and facet of this world. It was part of what really helped feel the unsettling tone of the strange forest the boys found themselves in, and really made it feel like they didn't have anywhere to turn that they could really trust.
That's all from me, now I depart with a warning...
Ooooh, you'd better beware...
Ooooh, the Beast is out there...
Ooooh, you'd be wise...
And don't believe his lies!

It's one of my favorites.
