The biggest thing I learned from publishing my first book: Outline. Outline, outline, outline. Before you ever write a single word of the plot, give yourself a blueprint to work with. You don't need to stick to it 100%, but you want to write something up that'll help guide you along the right path, and remember where you're going. I recommend this format:
Chapter 1: Clever Title Insert a big, long paragraph here explaining in vague terms what happens in this chapter. You don't need to cover every detail, and it's okay if things get changed as you go on, but this paragraph should give you a rough outline of what you expect to happen here. One sentence summary. If you can't summarize your chapter up in a sentence, you probably want smaller chapters, and/or a clearer vision of what your chapter is supposed to be. Chapter 2: Another Clever Title [. . .]
Example:
Chapter 1: The Violette Festival Six and Sapphire arrive at Violette City and meet up with Sapphire's mum. Sapphire's mum is surprisingly receptive to their spectral situation because Sapphire's family is weird, and the two spend their day enjoying the festivities to some extent, while meeting a cast of wacky characters, including the self-proclaimed magical girl, Sunshine-Sparkle Butterfly Heart. It's party time! Chapter 2: Zero Violette City suddenly comes under attack by a mysterious individual named Zero, who casts a barrier over the entire city. An intercom plays, and a mysterious individual says he's looking for a pair of convicts named Eight and Nine, and assures everyone they'll be fine as long as they don't interfere. Then, Zero casts the Convergence Point spell, which decimates downtown, and awakens ghastly spectres all across the city. Six and Sunshine rush to get everyone to safety inside the Magitech school, before trying to figure out what to do. Everyone becomes trapped in Violette City!
Also, do your research! No great writer starts out great. I recommend popping over to YouTube, and giving HelloFutureMe, and Overly Sarcastic Productions a watch. I did a small series of writing advice videos as well, though they are notably lower quality. Still, packed with a bunch of good writing advice from me, if you don't mind the self-advertising! I can link it if you want.
