Dear Bungie :D,
I have voiced this idea before but am unsure of the best way to ensure it’s heard, seen, or considered. I hope this is the right place, as I believe it could be a refreshing way to make players’ time, investment, and loot grind more valuable and rewarding! I have an idea that could help solve the Vault space issue in the game and find a balance between the loot grind and crafting systems. This would avoid the feeling of, “Well, I got my roll, guess I don’t need any more of these,” or crafting one roll and being done. It would mitigate the need to hoard multiple weapons in hopes that specific perks or rolls will one day become meta, while providing more convenience for players overall. This would also ensure ALL weapon drops (even after acquiring a good roll) have value instead of being useless auto-dismantles. Let’s face it, no one enjoys pressing and holding a button repeatedly, wasting valuable cumulative playtime just to get rid of multiple guns they know they have no need for.
Weapon Perk "Extract/Imbuement" System
In the current system, we have more options to get God Rolls than ever before, especially with certain weapons rolling with additional perks in each column and being enhanceable. However, it still feels limited and at the mercy of randomness (randomness isn’t inherently bad but can be relentlessly unforgiving). This new system would expand on the idea of getting multiple rolls on one weapon and weapon enhancement, but in a more targeted way that incorporates crafting aspects while putting a renewed focus on the grind for/value of future rolls of that weapon. (This is a looter shooter, after all.) It would work as follows.
"Base" / "Prime" Weapons
Once you acquire a weapon drop with decent perks you like, you can choose to make it your starting "Base" version of that weapon. This unlocks the ability to build upon it with subsequent drops, materials, and glimmer investment (e.g., Glimmer, Enhancement Cores/Prisms, Ascendant Shards/Alloys, etc.). Each subsequent drop of that same weapon could be used to "Extract" a given perk, which you could then "Imbue" into your "Base" weapon. This would function similarly to dismantling or power level infusion while giving you something in return for a roll you wouldn’t otherwise use or need. You could do this to replace a perk on your gun until you have the roll you’re looking for. Once you’ve fully enhanced your "Base" roll (including one set of perks in columns 3 and 4), you could start extracting perks from other drops of that weapon to add more in a new column or continue to replace perks in a specific column (these would also be enhanceable). You would continue this until you have a fully upgraded/enhanced "Prime" weapon. For example: My "Base" gun is pretty good (not great) with Subsistence/Incandescent and decent enough options in columns 1 and 2, but this new drop has Heal Clip in the 3rd column and nothing else worth keeping it for. Normally, I’d just discard it without a second thought. Instead, I could "Extract" Heal Clip upon dismantling and "Imbue" it into my "Base" weapon in place of or in addition to Subsistence, giving me the main roll I want or adding an extra option in a new column. Once three full sets of perks have been "Imbued" and Enhanced, the weapon becomes a fully loaded "Prime" weapon with three different God Rolls that YOU invested in and custom tailored for different situations. This could also tie into the new weapon tier system coming in Edge of Fate and beyond, where a fully masterworked/enhanced three-roll "Prime" weapon would be equivalent to a Tier 5 weapon.
Further Investment
This wouldn’t be the end all be all for the weapon either. If you decide to change perks in the future, you could still use other drops of that weapon to "Extract/Imbue" new perks in their respective columns, as long as the weapon is still obtainable as a drop. You also wouldn’t be limited to only one "Prime" version of that weapon. After creating your first "Prime" weapon, you could start a separate "Base" version to build another set of God Rolls. For example, you could have three "Prime" Mirror Imagos with a combined total of nine God Rolls for a ton of different scenarios. This would DRASTICALLY reduce the number of actual weapons players feel the need to hold onto, while decreasing the amount of Vault space needed moving forward. This should also reduce the load on the client side, as it was stated that Vault space is a problem in that regard.
Streamlined Player Experience
This system would help players feel that their time and efforts are well spent, rather than wasted on farming weapons only to be let down by not getting ANY desired rolls in the process. For the crafting aspect, it avoids the feeling of, “Once I get my last Red Border, I’m done!” ultimatiely hurting the grind aspect. While still allowing for a custom tailored weapon in the end. Sure, you’re still at the mercy of getting a weapon to drop with a specific perk, but it would be SUBSTANTIALLY easier to get one perk at a time rather than waiting for a perfect God Roll with ALL desired perks in one drop. Overall, I believe this would be a HUGELY welcomed change, utilizing already established game assets in a new way while giving “useless rolls” new life and purpose instead of being auto dismantles or Postmaster filler.
If anyone at Bungie sees this, I really hope you’ll consider this! :D Thanks for making this game what it is!
