Every time I gotta hop on some pvp for some pinnacles or seasonal challenges I'm always reminded that shotguns are the most brainless, brick IQ weapons in the game that require no real talent to find value out of. And it's astonishing to me that they continue to be like this for years.
And the best part about it is that there is no real counterplay. The maps are pretty much all exclusively CQC with tight corners and you'll only have maybe one sightline (which it's not like you can't sit at it all game), you can't back away from them because moving backwards is unsurprisingly slower than full sprinting forwards, and even if you are at a decent distance to where a shotgun would only hurt but not kill you, don't worry the follow up melee will lunge them 10 feet and finish the job!
It's so boring man. And then people wanna act like they aren't good, yet all I see in my games is full teams running shotguns. It's ALL shotguns, and maybe one person who actually likes to enjoy feeling something using a sniper.

As someone who plays with all classes and weapon types after 7 years of being a sniper hunter main, there are many spectrums. Shotguns aren't as braindead as the wild west of forsaken where a precision pellet mapped people from 9 meters. While most maps do favor CQB, shotguns feel mostly balanced and let's be real, the only reason you see a lot of handcannon shotty is because of scrims and faceit If faceit didn't ban 70% of the entire sandbox, you would see more than just shotgun handcannon on the higher echelon of the skill curve. But since most people who scrim need to run handcannon shotgun because everything else is banned, they just leave it glued on their character. What is the appeal for faceit? Money, basically. If you're good, you can earn money through that website. That's just my take honestly
