Doctor Who "Midnight" Vs "The Well"
Lost everything and to rewrite it so post is quite a bit ranty as I was pressed for time
So for those who don't know "Midnight" is a fan favorite episode of NuWho, all the way back from. Series 4. It's an episode that was never initially planned to be created, but after a different episode was scrapped and a desperate need to fill in that gap "Midnight" was produced and written by Russel T David. And with only 2 weeks of filming and a bare bones budget, one of the best episodes of Doctor Who was born. It was meant as a stand alone episode, much like most Doctor who episodes. And because of the very minimal budget it was written as a bottle episode with a great focus on human nature. I'm not going to go too indepth of "Midnight" except where it applies in contrast to "The Well". On the other hand we have "The Well", a surprise sequel to "Midnight" nearly 20 years later. (Damn I'm getting old) So "The Well", was it worth waiting the many years? Is it a worthy sequel to "Midnight"? In Short... No, not even close. In long, well you can see down below. There's a couple core reasons I believe that "The Well" is not only a poor episode of Doctor Who but also a "fake" sequel. Not really sure what else to call it, it's supposedly a sequel to "Midnight" but in truth It can't be a sequel based on the continuity of the episode. So there's many problems I have with "The Well", first and foremost the idea of there even being a sequel to Midnight. Midnight was very clearly never meant to have a sequel and shouldn't have had a sequel because it was a self-contained, perfect horror story that didn't need further explanation or continuation. A sequel risks diminishing the mystery and impact of the original, particularly if it tries to explain the entity's nature or motives in a way that doesn't fit the original story. The ambiguity of the original episode is part of its strength. So at this point I'm just going to rapid fire with little in depth explanation, but I will further elaborate if inquired. First, there is no way the entity in "Midnight" is the same as "The Well". The way the entities work in both episodes are completely different. In "Midnight" you never actually see the creature, that was literally the whole point of it so the fact they actually gave it a physical form I find extremely disrespectful and to me shows that it was never initially intended to be the same entity. Further evidence for this assumption (yeah I know what that means) is that the mechanics are entirely different from each other. The Midnight creature would literally possess someone since it seemed to not have a physical body. The Well entity would instead attach itself to a person's back having a physical body that was mostly unseen. The Rules of the Midnight creature is as follows - First it repeats -Then it Synchronizes -Finally it moves onto the next stage The entity was intelligent, targeting the Doctor and using the paranoia of the others to nearly kill the Doctor. It was described as "stealing his voice". The Entities motives were mostly unknown, all we knew was that it was very old and very alone and drawn to the people when they were forced to take a detour and happened to come across it. The main goal seems to have been to get off the planet and escape with the others undetected. The Rules of "The Well" creature is as follows -First is attaches itself to the host - It allows it's physical form to briefly be seen to inflict panic and paranoia - When a host is killed it jumps to the person who killed the initial host and then that person will become the new host - Finally it will kill anyone that goes directly behind the host by using some sort of telepathic power. - Also something about mirrors since it kills whatever is behind it mirror are able to separate a host form the entity (Although this is what the episode states the continuity in the episode does not follow its own rules) The entity in "The Well" crawled from a deep well in the planet and was described as ''laughing" seemingly enjoying the chaos and "toying" with the people in the mining colony. It was able to cause major paranoia and panic killing all but one person from the entire colony. The main goal seems to have been just to create chaos as it enjoyed it and couldn't actually be defeated. So the entities are entirely different but the episode actually accounts for all the continuity changes by saying "it evolved over 400,000" years... Yeah I'm not buying it lol. Also this is the explanation used for how the planet in both episodes are the same when they shouldn't be but more on that later! So the planet on which both episodes take place is called "Midnight" hence the first episode's name. So since the first episode is called Midnight and the creature kills people who go behind it otherwise said in the episode as being 'in the midnight position' in reference to a clock. A couple things are wrong with this connection, first it doesn't actually kill people in the 'midnight position', it kills people who go directly behind the host... That's your 6 o'clock not midnight but besides that the name Midnight is derived from the name of the planet so how that ended up being a factor of how the entity works doesn't make any sense. OH GOD THIS IS TAKING FOREVER!!!! WHY DID I DECIDE TO DO THIS!!! DAMN YOU JMANN! FORCING ME TO ACTUALLY EXPLAIN MY POSITION!!! ARGHGH!!! INCOHERENT RANT TIME!!! Next there is no way both planets are the same even with its lazy explanation. So in the episode "Midnight" the planet Midnight's surface is entirely covered in diamonds. The planet is extremely dangerous since the Sun in the solar system is said to have soaked the entire planet in X-Tonic rays making it completely uninhabitable. It's also stated that you would NEVER be able to go to the surface because you'd be vaporized by the radiation. The episode explains it more but it clearly states that the planet could never ever be inhabited because of a bunch of external factors. The episode makes it very clear. Most dangerous planet out there, can never actually be interacted with in any meaningful way. The resort on Midnight had to actually be built off the planet and lowered from orbit, "Never actually touching it" as said in the episode. In "The Well" however the planet 400,000 years later is entirely different. The entire surface was stripped dry (they took all the diamonds)... The continuity in "Midnight" made it very clear this would never be possible. The explanation is the systems star blew up... If that happened the planet would no longer exist just saying... You know what I haven't even explained why "The Well" is bad on its own merit. I'll make this very quick especially since I highly doubt people are even going to read it. Schuti is terrible as the Doctor and is an idiot and doesn't actually save people The Deaf individual infected by the entity who you're supposed to route for is a bad person. They know exactly how the creature works and says nothing until someone gets killed. She knowingly let's someone go behind her knowing what the result would be. At one point she literally kills like 4 people by turning her pack to them even though there was no reason to do so. The episode tries to portray it as someone else's fault but with any examination of the scene it's quite clear it's actually hers, all she has to do is stop turning!!! Freaking infuriating Next inconsistent with how the creature actually works. At certain points it doesn't actually follow its own rules. I'm tired boss....

 • Given that RTD wrote 'Midnight,' I think he's allowed creative license to do with the character what he wants. I had taken some time to consider how to best debate the episodes further, but I don't see that it would make a difference and it's after 3 am for me so I'm not looking to be drawn into an extensive argument over the matter. Plain and simple, both episodes exist, both are great in my opinion, and I hope (yet kind of don't) that there will be more on the Entity in the future. Perhaps it's a member of The Pantheon?
