Despite what anyone says, the sunsetting, not so heavy MMO beats are the way for Destiny. Been here since Jan 2015 and this is the worst I’ve ever seen the franchise. Back when people were saying it was dead there was a passion in those who stayed that I’m not seeing now. Forsaken, the Taken King, Rise of Iron and House of Wolves were the pinnacle Destiny experiences.
I will see this to the end but it does sadden me to see the franchise like it is.

Activation was part of the problem as much as anyone else. Never forget the fact that they outright ignored every improvement and learning from D1. They launched D2 with no random rolled weapons, that alone was a slap in the face for every player. To top it off it was their decision to not implement dedicated servers for PVP. Guaranteeing lag and poor connections would be permanent part of the experience.

The moment they started handing out Exotics, is when the core gameplay loop was broken. Then when the game went F2P, and they maximized the monetization. That’s what killed it for me. I’m just back to play the Story content and may disappear again.

It really did. You're not wrong. Activision tried to warn us.

Solo killed the game? Not bad story telling? Not story telling focused on alternative lifestyles? Not having an @ Bungie group for every perceived "marginalized" group of people while ignoring Veterans? Not having terrible launch after terrible launch? Not bad game play? Not bad RNG? Weight gate I am looking at you! Not making the game harder? not sun setting? - I know several players who quit then and never came back Not players being tiered of nerf after berf and exotics being turned off because it can be abused in a raid or PVP? Not making PVE main suffer so PVP which is SO broken can be a just a smidge less broken? Not devs saying they want players to cry and laugh about it? None of the bad decisions and poor implementations that bungie has made for 3 years has anything to do with the lack of passion or trust on the players part? I would say that if you think making the game a bit more solo player friendly has done all the damage, you are so wrong that it isn't even conceivable.

Massive rose-tinted glasses on this one. House of Wolves was MID. It’d barely hold up as a mediocre season nowadays. Taken King itself was great but there was nothing to do for months. Not to mention the horrible PvP meta that plagued the game until the April Update. And the April Update literally added nothing… Forsaken was good but it had one of the most brutal leveling curves we’ve had since vanilla d1. This made 1/2 the game unapproachable for the vast majority of players. This wasn’t fixed until Black Armory fixed a massive amount of the issues - 4 months later. Rise of Iron was good, I’ll agree with that. Plus Vanilla D2 and CoO were both before Bungie split.

I remember the excitement of Bungie leaving Activision. So much hope that with Bungie controlling their own “Destiny”, we would see the game unshackled from the yearly release cycle, and the time to innovate and create fun things for us… Fast forward to now… and all we have is Delayed content, less quality, riddled with bugs, derivative, rehashed, all at a higher price point. This is on top having the worst micro-transaction/monetization in the industry. Simply put, in 2025 we are expected to pay more for much less. It’s sad really.

Edited by Ogma: Destroyer of Worlds: 4/30/2025 1:14:21 AMNot sure I completely agree with that pinnacle claim, but I also agree that it’s REALLY bad right now. My group’s discord is dead. DEAD. No one even said a thing about the Edge of Fate reveal date or posted the teaser. Zero talk. That’s a first. For me personally the return to pure RNG with zero bad luck protection just killed my desire and motivation to play. Nuked it. For the first time in the game’s history I don’t care to finish content that I paid for. Not sure there’s any coming back from that.

The "end" might come sooner than you think.

Edited by Zodleon: 4/29/2025 12:51:15 PMFar as I'm concerned, the final shape was the end. We beat the darkness, the campaign was pretty good, the location was cool, and the raid was solid if overtuned for the average raider. I'd have been more happy if they called it there.

D2s content is far superior than D1. Nostalgia is very strong. The reason the game declined is because leadership thought it was a good idea to launch 5 other projects simultaneously.
-
This is fair, but I will say the Witch Queen was fantastic, but since then ... everything has been pure garbage. Like, not even a little good. Nothing, literally nothing, has been even remotely competent, since the Witch Queen.

I disagree, being able to play Destiny as a solo player has not killed the game. What is killing the game is bad decisions from Bungie and bad game design. From the first day of Destiny 1, it has supported both solo players and team players. The only way to keep players in the game, and maybe find a few new ones, is letting players have an easy way into the game. Personally, I would say that the game is getting worse and worse for solo and casual players. Before, we had an interesting story (generally), and the player could flow with the story. There where challenges in the game, but not too difficult so it destroyed the pace, you could sit down an hour and progress in the story and side quests, and then continue another day. Nowadays, some story sequences are fairly easy, but then in the end you meet several bullet sponge bosses in a row, and if you die, for instance, at the last boss, you have to begin from the first boss, all over again. And the missions are way too long and you can't save the progress, so if you have to quit, you have to begin the overly long story mission again, and face several bullet sponges in the end where you know you'll die xx times. Personally, it has led to me not finishing the last acts story/exotic missions at all. I can't sit for so long playing, and I'm not a masochist, so nowadays the game feels pretty much uninteresting since I know I don't have the time to be able to finish anything in the game. The little things you could do is very unrewarding. So, I would say it is not the casual players or solo players destroying the game, If you have the time to sit and play together with friends for hours in a row, you have all the possibilities to do that. You can play every type of activity in several difficulty levels. Solo players and casuals don't have that much choice. Most issues and problems relates to bad game design. Who matches to who, bugs, bad stories, unbalanced activities and missions, too much grinding, too long story missions, not being able to save progress, bullet sponges, meaningless stuff forced into the game such as potions that is just there to take players time, silly mechanic stuff there for the same reason and a lot more. That is all on Bungie - not solo players.

I didn't know Destiny back in the Activision days. Over the last couple of years of what has been coming out about Activision... that might be a good thing. I started playing in late 2020. I started off with Forsaken & the Tangled Shore. 2-3 months later, the Witch Queen dropped and you could imagine my surprise when content for Forsaken & the Tangled Shore just vanished from the directory. All of a sudden, I couldn't increase the level of my weapons and I had no idea why. Didn't know what a TWAB was or anything like that so I didn't know that sunsetting was a thing until it happened. As a new player that was very frustrating. 4-5 years later, I can see the value in sunsetting old weapons with the exception of destinations. To combat weapon fatigue I emptied my vault before Final Shape and only kept a handful of weapons so I was forced to play with new gear and that made the experience so much better for me. We have options so thats a good thing. Here's another unpopular take... I think the Nine should nuke the Enclave. Weapon Crafting was bad for RNG. Problem is so many people like weapon crafting and now that it exists, you can't just take it away. The fact that you can't craft current season weapons gives me hope that we are moving in the right direction back to good ole fashion RNG. Nothing like grinding an activity to get that special roll. Heck I'm still grinding Court of Blades trying to get better rolls on adepts. The rarity makes it special. Right now I could name a ton of RNG weapons over the years that I have worked for versus weapons I have crafted. Maybe it's just me, but I never made that connection with crafted weapons. If Hersey weapons were craftable, I would collect the patterns and stop playing the activity simple as that. Nuke the Enclave! Not blowing smoke, but I think it's unfair to say Bungie is doing a bad job with Destiny. Sometimes I feel like they listen a little too much to the community. Not all community suggestions are good suggestions. Sure they could improve on comms but I think they are doing the best that they can given the circumstances. Let's at least see what they have cooked up for Edge of Fate before. I hope they share more information on their multi-year roadmap.

How old were you in 2015?
-
Lmao why do you think Activision dumped Bungie? They got tired of having to pull other studios in to help Bungie actually have a release. Bungie has always been the problem.
-
Yeah is really bad lately.

Yeah is really bad lately.

WQ and FS were awesome DLCs. I still have fun playing too. Looking forward to the new DLCs and the new armor system.
-
yeah the focus on casual really ruined the game, i hope they add crafting back while adding a REAL worth grind for end game content, adepts are trash and useless

House of wolves was the most fun I’ve ever had across destiny 1 or 2! Mostly because back then I was a PvP main, actually hated the taken king PvP changes, but taken king is where the PvE side of me really started to dig into destiny. I think Bungie and destiny would have been much better off if they’d stayed with activision and just fought their tails off to not have to put out a game every two years. I think activision would have gone along with it if they’d of pitched it to them with real passion, conviction and a clear picture for the future. I think activision would have still wanted sequels but I think they would have allowed bungie to maybe fit what we have into 3 games instead of 2 and then I think the fourth would be in development right now and coming this year or next maybe. Idk, we’ll never know. It could all just be down to management and no matter what publisher/studio/corp they were working with we might of ended up here either way.

You realize Bungie isn't solo right They have been under the incompetent and out of touch guidance of the geniuses at Sony since 2022
