Since the announcement of RoI I've been doing a lot searching through Destiny lore. Looking around for what's out there about what's all happened so far. Recently I've been looking around for what we know about the traveler, and there were some good stuff there. While playing through the original story line though I had a strange thought pop into my head. It was while I was talking to the Exo Stranger on Venus. She talked about not being born of the light.
ive seen terrible things born out in the darkness.
To me this seems a little odd, especially since she's an Exo, which were created on earth. How could she have seen what was created? Unless she's from pre-collapse there's little else the stranger could be if not the traveler.
(This is still a work in progress but I'd like to hear if anybody has some ideas)

i think she was referencing times conflux, also known as atheon since the vault was a vex simulation of a hive throne world

Edited by GhostvirusYT: 7/8/2016 12:50:13 AMShe can travel through alternate timelines, and parallel universes, and at least lately has focused on timelines / parallel universes highly similar to if not essentially indistinguishable from the one Destiny takes place in. Although we know the universe in which she first encountered Rasputins cousin is quite a bit different. Just ask Charlemagne, but then ofcourse Charlemagnes nephew knew him better..... as I recall she beared a male body then.

She could be the Traveler or from the Traveler, although I don't think so. The good news is that the Stranger is one of the few plot points they bothered putting into the original Destiny so I'm pretty sure we're eventually going to find out who she is. But we don't know yet. When she says "I was not forged in Light," I think she means she was never a Guardian and did not receive Light from the Traveler, not that she herself was born in the Darkness. My interpretation is that she saw other things that were born out in the darkness. No theory seems more likely than not, but there are theories that are more likely than others. My favorite is that the Stranger is Maya Sundaresh. She was a scientist from the Ishtar Collective who helped create what were possibly the first exos with copies of her teams' own consciousnesses and also likely founded the Future War Cult (see Ghost Fragment: Vex 1-5). She spent her whole life studying the Vex and--if she founded the Future War Cult--attempting to look into the future(s?) which may explain why/how she possesses a gun with parts that shouldn't exist yet. If grimoire card Rasputin 4 is Rasputin addressing the Stranger (the passage, "you’re certainly not MINE although once you must have been," seems to imply Rasputin is addressing an Exo) she can also step through time which is a trait of the Vex or possibly someone who figured out how they do it (like a scientist who spent their original lifetime studying the Vex and many more as a consciousness inside of an Exo). If it's Maya, the Stranger was around pre-collapse and either through Future War Cult rituals looking into the future(s?) or from stepping through time some other way she has seen things no one else has. Like terrible things born out in the Darkness.

All exos are precollapse.

She is a stray vex mind that corrupted and formed a moral code. then inhabited an old dead exo body. All makes sense... Not really but I'm sure someone could put the pieces together on it.

Look up lore about Maya Sundaresh. Aka:
The stranger before she was an exo
Edited by Haffoc: 7/7/2016 4:04:15 PMThe prevailing theory is that she is one of the Ishtar scientists who were studying the Vex, or possibly one of the clones removed from the Vex simulation with the help of a Warmind. Initially they appeared to be using early mechanical proxies through Rasputin (who refers to the mysterious Exo he's seen in his bunker as your not one of mine, though you must have been originally - or something like that.) to study the Vex network and city. Rasputin either designed the Exo's or was heavily involved in their creation. Edit: laxboy830 says it better below.

I believe some of the fwc grimoire cards talk about a machine that allows a person to view alternate timelines or futures. The machine was too dangerous for human minds so the fwc needed to find a way to use the device without killing the subject inside. The exo stranger was salvaged and built for this purpose, at least that is the theory.

She was not forged in the Light. Exos were made by humans. What she means is that she was not built in a human colony during the Golden Age (like most Exos) or in the Last City after the collapse. She lives out in the Darkness, fighting the Vex

What was your strange thought?
