Do you know how a pawn shop works? If the police are involved, they have to release the item to the authorities and lose whatever money they put into it. All he has to do is prove its his which isn't hard. When a console is linked to an account, its done so using the serial number of the device. If they press charges on his uncle, they are guaranteed to give it back.
Yup, sure do. The drug addict will have already pawned the item, gotten the money, and gotten high well before the police arrive to track down the stolen item. Believe me a stolen Xbox is at the bottom of the list of priorities. And if the family member chooses not to press charges, then the cops won't be investigating at all.
Pawn shops run items against a directory of stolen goods on multiple occasions. If they're legal pawn shops that is. Then again, if they sold the item already it's a different story. Was just a ps3 though, easily replaced. They just need to focus on getting his uncle help or keeping him out of their house.
