Matter can not be created or destroyed. Basically they discovered that what we can see is so vast that if was all consolidated into 1 spec the massive gravity would not have allowed for an explosion. Asside from Science saying all the stuff was always floating around that's not to say there was not an intelligence that affected the stuff floating around to turn into the stuff we are now.
