When I received mine (original max 300 damage) I didn't even know it was good it actually didn't get upgraded until a few weeks later when I was raiding with some more people and some one went crazy when they got it.

Same here. Mine was my first exotic at 300 max. I leveled the cryptarch and when i went to pick up my postmaster package, it turned into a ghorn. I remember thinking "oh great, a rocket launcher..."
