What about the strange coins from the weekly and the weapons from exotic bountys

Strange coins are the reward, its guaranteed. So it's earning in a sense. But the bounty weapons to me personally are the only pieces in the game you actually earn.

How is doing the work on a bounty different than doing the work on the Weekly?

Its a quest you know you'll be given a certain exotic not a random one. If I did Tolands Legacy and got a Hard Light instead of Bad JuJu, I would disagree. But since it's a quest, I feel its more earned than a Nightfall/exotic.

OP was asking about buying from Xur. If you do Weekly Heroic at 30 you're guaranteed 9 Strange Coin. If you take those coins to Xur and press the button on No Land Beyond, you're guaranteed a No Land Beyond. The only thing "lucky" about that is whether or not Xur brings something you want. You've earned the currency, so by extension you earned whatever you spend the currency on, since currency is just a placeholder for earnings.

Oh I didn't think he was talking about Xur. I thought it was just nightfall and weekly drops. Buying from Xur is still kinda. Nothing is earned, but I do approve of Xur.
